GENERAL
NAME: Coralee Jade Wong
NICKNAMES: No. ಠ_ಠ
AGE/DOB/ZODIAC: 16 / August 20th / Leo
BLOOD STATUS: Pureblood
GENDER/PRONOUNS: Female, she/her
SEXUALITY: Asexual, but she doesn't know this yet. She just assumes that none of her peers meet her exacting standards. After all, she has crushes on celebrities, doesn't she?
HOMETOWN: Elysian Fields, a hidden wizarding community in Los Angeles, California, USA.
CONCEPT: This pampered princess will smile sweetly while stabbing you in the back.
PHYSICAL
APPEARANCE: Coralee knows the value of appearances, and is never anything less than immaculately turned out. She picks out her outfits in advance, making sure the colours and styles go perfectly and that she has just the right accessories to match. And if she spends hours doing her hair and makeup each morning, well, that's no one's business but her own. She's very self-conscious about her freckles and few people can claim to have seen her bare-faced.
HEIGHT: 5'7"
PB: Joanna Sotomura
PERSONALITY
LIKES: Being the centre of attention, gossip, secrets (especially the blackmail kind), designer labels, bright lipstick, getting her hair or nails done professionally, compliments, having minions to do her bidding.
DISLIKES: People who don't know their place in the social order, being told "no", being interrupted, GOOSEBERRY, actually having to work (ugh), Muggle technology, failure, insects, people with irritating habits.
PERSONALITY:
The world revolves around Coralee, and anyone who disagrees is, quite simply, wrong. She is the starring player in the story of her life, and everyone else exists merely to play a supporting role. Coralee thrives on being the centre of attention, and naturally expects her every whim to be catered to, but despite being selfish and self-centred, she's far from unobservant.
She pounces on any juicy piece of gossip she hears, and is skilled at wheedling information from even the most tight-lipped of people. (And what she can't find out, she makes up. If you say something with enough conviction, it sounds true, and that's all you need to start a rumour.) Gossip and secrets are her currency: Coralee has a mind like a steel trap and she stores this information for future use. (This is possibly why there's no room in her brain for what they cover in lessons...)
Promises that "of course I won't tell your best friend what you really think of her!" are made as easily as they're broken. You'd think that no one with any sense would tell Coralee anything, but she's very good at making her target feel like they're the most important person in the world right now. She focuses intently on them, with little touches on their arm to show she's listening, she cares, and showers her favourite people with little gifts and favours. (Of course, her favourite people are liable to fall out of favour at the drop of a hat.)
Although she doesn't think of it as blackmail (how dramatic!) Coralee will use what she knows to manipulate other people -- sometimes for her own ends, and sometimes just because it's fun. Guilt is not an emotion she feels. Oh, she knows exactly when she's crossed the line, but instead of feeling ashamed, those moments give her a secret thrill of power. Life is a game, and she loves to win -- by whatever means possible. And Coralee delights in throwing the cat among the pixies if she feels that life is getting too boring.
Her dominant personality means that Coralee is a bit of a bully, but she's not outwardly aggressive, relying on fake sweetness and bitchy words to get her own way. She rarely loses her temper in public, preferring instead to coldly plan her revenge in private.
Obstacles are merely inconveniences to be brushed aside. She's seen from her parents' example that money can solve nearly anything, so Coralee often buys her way out of a situation, or pays someone else to sort it out. Problems are for other people! Because of this, she can come across as lazy -- too pampered and spoilt to lift a finger to help herself -- but the ridiculous lengths she'll go to in order to prove a point show just how driven Coralee can be when she puts her mind to something.
Coralee is never wrong. Of course, it's a lady's prerogative to change her mind, should she so choose -- but Coralee is very talented at brushing aside solid facts and evidence when it suits her. She's good at taking charge (some might say bossy) and getting things done, but delegates rather than getting her hands dirty, and she has high expectations of her minions. Her innate belief that she's always right means she won't listen to other ideas and opinions once she's set on a course of action, but she has the inner strength and steely determination to make a success out of just about anything -- and woe betide anyone who stands in her way.
HISTORY
FAMILY MEMBERS:
Astrid Wong, née Eldkvist. Mother, pureblood, society wife. A blonde bombshell of a woman, the scandalous rumours that Swedish-born Astrid was a centerfold model for Playwizard in her younger days are completely untrue. The Eldkvist family made their fortune over the centuries from hunting Swedish Short-Snout dragons and selling their skin, blood, and various other body parts. Astrid treats her daughter like a doll she can dress up and display. Coralee has no problems with this.
Henry Wong. Father, pureblood, lawyer. Henry is a senior partner in a large and prestigious wizarding law firm, tackling high-stakes cases such as corporate litigation. Coralee has only the vaguest idea of what her father does: she knows that his job is very important and he makes lots of money, but it also makes him stressed and he usually brings his work home with him. However, he always has time for his little princess.
Ryan Wong. Brother, pureblood, junior lawyer. 23 years old, graduated from Port Prep. Works at the same law firm as his father. Coralee considers her brothers to be pretty much interchangeable, but Ryan is the one more likely to rat her out to their parents when he catches her breaking curfew or taking money from Astrid's purse. However, he's also better at sorting out a shitty situation and reassuring her that everything will be okay.
Eric Wong. Brother, pureblood, apprentice lawyer. 21 years old, graduated from Port Prep. Works at the same law firm as his father. Eric is the more unpredictable of Coralee's brothers -- there's only a 50% chance he'd rat her out, but he's also the type to blame his own transgressions on her if it suits him. Coralee doesn't trust him, but he comes in handy when she needs a favour. Trouble is, he'll hold it over her.
Arthur (Wong) de Luca. Uncle, pureblood, VP of Worker Relations at Witches' Secret. Coralee thinks her uncle is something of an embarrassment -- he's, like, obsessed with Muggles! And what kind of self-respecting wizard would take his wife's name when he married?
Ursula de Luca. Cousin, halfblood, junior Ribbonfin. Despite being related, Ursula only ranked as Coralee's fourth best friend at Port Prep. Coralee considers her cousin an automatic ally, but also loves bossing her around -- or trying to, at least, since this has become a lot harder in recent years. Still, Ursula totally gets it when Coralee needs someone to complain to about this stupid hippie school.
HISTORY:
Coralee Wong was born with a silver spoon in her mouth. The youngest of three children, she was spoiled and doted on from day one. Anything she wanted, she got, whether it was a unicorn at her birthday party or a chance to meet her favourite celebrity idol. With the Wongs' money and influence, nothing was impossible -- not for their little princess.
With her two older brothers lined up to follow in their father's footsteps, nothing was expected from Coralee except to attend charity lunches and balls with her mother, and to meet eligible young purebloods whom she might one day marry, strengthening the connections of the Wong family. These low expectations, coupled with non-existent discipline, meant that Coralee grew up doing exactly what she pleased. "Self-improvement" was not a word she was acquainted with. After all, wasn't she already perfect just as she was?
She attended Portiuncula Preparatory School, where she (naturally) became the Queen Bee in her year. If she liked your shoes or your purse, you were in -- at least for that week -- but if she took against you, then you didn't stand a chance. Coralee made several other students' lives a misery as she mercilessly mocked her targets for not being as wealthy, as pretty, or as socially clued-in as she was. However, her snide words and derisive laughter eventually broke one of her victims, who one morning told her parents that she would rather die than go to school.
The girl's parents naturally contacted the school, and a mediation session was hurriedly arranged. Coralee's parents had been completely unaware of their daughter's actions, and were desperate to limit the damage as much as possible, but Coralee refused to apologise. She hadn't done anything wrong! Even very generous donations to both Port Prep and an anti-bullying charity weren't enough to salvage the situation, so Mr and Mrs Wong informed their daughter that she would quietly move to a new school, where she would keep her head down. Coralee assumed she would be going somewhere like Ilvermorny, but her parents had chosen Gooseberry for its small size and out-of-the-way location (and, of course, the fact that they could buy Coralee's admission). Needless to say, Coralee was horrified. To her, the outdoors was anything but great, and didn't Gooseberry have a reputation for being, well, alternative?
"Look, they have horses, princess!" her father encouraged her, thrusting a brochure under her nose. Coralee pouted and stamped, cried until her face went puffy, and even stopped eating for eight whole hours, but her parents were immovable. Come freshman year, she was going to Gooseberry.
On the bus ride from hell (seriously, had these people never heard of Floo powder or portkeys?) Coralee sat and stewed and eventually came to a decision. There was no reason why she couldn't still be Queen Bee at this new school, right? Sadly, the students at Gooseberry weren't as easily won over as her old clique at Port Prep, but through cunning and determination she clawed her way up the ranks, joining several clubs in order to have more of an influence over the school. Bearing her mother's parting words in mind ("Remember, you catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar!") Coralee used every inch of social charm that she possessed to flatter and bribe her way to -- well, if not quite the top, then at least high enough to satisfy her. For now.
SCHOOL
YEAR: Junior
HOUSE: Coppertale
SORTING: Coralee found her Sorting intensely frustrating. She just wanted to be picked for the best house, but all the emblems seemed to think their house fitted that description, and how was she supposed to choose when they couldn't even come to a decision between them? After five minutes of Coralee standing there getting more and more confused and cross, Ms Vector came into the cave. "Finally," Coralee snapped. "Can you please wrap this up already?" Coppertale it was.
WAND: Cherry and dragon heartstring, 10", rigid.
FAMILIAR: Coralee's parents bought her a kitten to soften the blow of being sent to Gooseberry. Empress Wu is a white Scottish Fold and possibly the most chilled cat you will ever meet. Coralee likes to carry her around on her arm, á la Taylor Swift. (Except Taylor Swift won't do this for another year so Coralee is totally the trendsetter here.)
CLASSES: (Core Classes) Charms, History of Magic, Transfiguration; (Electives) Defence Against the Dark Arts, Wizard Literature; (Advanced Study) Divination
SENIOR PROJECT: Probably a very uninspired dissertation on something. That sounds like the least taxing option
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE:
Coralee is... not terribly bright. She tries to get away with doing the least amount of work possible, relying on her father to throw money at the school when she fails a class. Needless to say, she's not a favourite with any of the teachers.
Her favourite class is Divination, because Mr Chettri is gorgeous and also practically a celebrity. Coralee's great-grandmother, Chuntao Wong, was a skilled Seer who guided her family through the turbulent events of the 20th century, always ensuring they came out on top. However, Coralee has only inherited a smidgen of this talent, and is all but useless at making predictions. (However, she does seem to have an uncanny knack when it comes to knowing which clothes and shoes would best suit tomorrow's weather. Coincidence? Who knows.)
Her least favourite class is Wizard Literature, because apparently her taste in novels doesn't count as literature. She didn't realise there would be so much writing involved in Wiz Lit, and imagined she would be able to sit at the back of the class with a magazine hidden inside her book. No such luck.
